This covers passengers with an intellectual or cognitive impairment, or a learning or developmental condition, who can still communicate, take care of their own physical needs and understand and follow instructions.
- Passengers with Alzheimer's.
- Passengers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Passengers with Down syndrome.
- Passengers with an intellectual or developmental disability.
Keep in mind
- These passengers don't need medical clearance just because they have a mild intellectual disability or a developmental condition. If they report any additional illness, that condition has to go through the corresponding medical clearance process.
- When traveling alone, they can use the Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service as long as they meet all the requirements.
- Passengers with ASD don't need medical clearance for this condition, whether they travel alone or with someone.
These passengers need the SSR DPNA code (Disabled Passenger Needing Assistance) added to their booking, ideally at the time of booking.
Seats
- Seats are assigned based on availability, excluding emergency exit rows.
Passengers with ASD who request the Unaccompanied Minor (UMNR) service should be told that the service normally assigns an aisle seat. If the passenger has a sensory sensitivity that makes an aisle seat impossible, they can't use the UMNR service. And if their age means they can't travel as an unaccompanied minor, they'll need to travel with an adult.
How to request it
The travel manager should always ask the passenger whether they need assistance during boarding, transit or deplaning, and record the answer in the booking with an SSR OTHS.
Example: guiding the passenger to the gate for their connecting flight
If the passenger says they don't need assistance
Meet and Assist (MAAS) — Brazil only
MAAS assistance means guiding and accompanying the passenger through check-in, boarding and the flight. As an exception, passengers who request MAAS in Brazil receive assistance under the same standards that apply to passengers with disabilities (PNAE), per article 14 of ANAC Resolution 280.
Who can request this service
- Senior passengers.
- Pregnant passengers.
- Mothers traveling with infants or nursing babies.
- Passengers with a condition that limits their independence, such as those on crutches or recovering passengers traveling without medical clearance.
Keep in mind
- The service is only available on LATAM-operated flights. It doesn't apply to codeshare flights operated by other airlines.
- MAAS assistance can be requested up to 24 hours before departure.
- Requests made less than 24 hours ahead may be covered depending on staff availability at the airport.
- Passengers using the MAAS service can't sit in emergency exit rows.
