POCs, respiratory assistance devices, dialysis machines and orthopedic positioning devices.

Passengers who need to travel with medical devices can do so safely and at no extra cost, as long as the equipment meets LATAM's operational and safety requirements.

Passengers who need to use a portable oxygen concentrator or a respiratory assistance device during the flight, or to carry a dialysis machine, must have the service confirmed in the booking. To do that, enter the SSR MEDA and POC codes where they apply.

Seat assignment has to be requested from the Global Sales Support (GSS) team, through the support chat only.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC)

POCs are electronic devices that draw on ambient air to deliver concentrated oxygen (90%) to people who need it because of chronic respiratory or cardiac insufficiency. Passengers who use a POC must be in stable condition at home.

General notes

  • You must obtain medical clearance.
  • The only model allowed on board is the Mini Mercury by Lumiar Health, approved across LATAM's whole operation under current Brazilian regulations.
  • FAA-certified brands and models are also allowed.
  • Devices must carry an FAA approval label in which the manufacturer confirms they meet the acceptance criteria for carriage and use on board.
  • The passenger must be physically able to operate the device, hear and see the alarms and respond to them. If they can't, they need to travel with a companion.
  • The passenger must carry enough batteries to cover 150% of the total scheduled itinerary time, including stops and connections, counting the battery already in the POC.
  • Spare batteries must be packed individually so they can't touch each other, and must comply with dangerous goods regulations.
  • There's no minimum age for carrying this equipment.

Required FAA label text

“The manufacturer of this POC has determined this deviceconforms to all applicable FAA acceptance criteriafor POC carriage and use on board aircraft.”

Where the device goes on board

  • If the POC is about the size of a personal item, it can stay with the passenger for the whole flight or go under the seat in front.
  • If the POC is the size of a carry-on bag, it has to be stowed in the overhead bin during taxi, takeoff and landing.
  • If it stays under the seat in front during taxi, takeoff and landing, it can remain plugged in and running.
  • If the passenger needs to stow it in the overhead bin, the device must be switched off and not used during that time.

Seats

  • Premium Economy and Economy cabins: a window seat or a middle seat in the center block is preferred.
  • Emergency exit rows and the first row can't be assigned, because the POC can't go under the seat in front in those spots.
  • Premium Business cabin: the passenger can be seated anywhere in the cabin.

How to request it

Medical clearance has to be arranged when the booking is made, or at the latest 48 hours before departure, on any route. To request the service, enter the SSR PPOC code and add the brand and model of the device in the free text.

All medical clearance information must be sent to LATAM. LATAM then enters an SSR MEDA with the details needed to process it. Whenever possible, book and sell directly on the flight operated by each airline.

Respiratory assistance devices

Respiratory assistance devices can be used on board to support passengers with apnea or breathing difficulties. The devices on the approved list are accepted. Other devices not on the list can also be carried, as long as they have a label, leaflet or manufacturer document stating they're designed for use during a flight.

“This device does not exceed the maximum level of radiatedradio frequency interference as described in the current editionof Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA)Document (DO) 160, section 21, Category M.”

General notes

  • Medical clearance isn't needed just to carry a respiratory assistance device.
  • The device is carried in addition to the standard carry-on baggage and at no cost, as long as it's brought into the cabin to be used during the flight.
  • The passenger provides the device.
  • The passenger must carry enough batteries for the device to run on its own for the whole trip.
  • Spare batteries must be packed individually, with no chance of touching each other, and must comply with dangerous goods regulations.
  • If the itinerary includes other airlines, the passenger should check the conditions directly with each operator.
  • If the passenger has an illness or condition on the List of medical conditions, they need to arrange medical clearance.

Seats

  • If the device is about the size of a handbag, it can stay with the passenger for the whole flight.
  • If it's larger, it goes under the seat in front or in the overhead bin.
  • The passenger can be seated anywhere.

How to request it

The travel manager needs to tell the passenger the conditions for carrying and using the device: whether the device is on the approved list, the option of proving approval with a label or manufacturer document, the length of the flight, the need for enough batteries, the rule that spares are packed individually, and that operating and handling the device is the passenger's responsibility. This has to be documented with an OSI.

Dialysis machine

Dialysis machines can travel in the cabin or in the hold. They can't be used during the flight.

Carriage conditions

Who uses the deviceConditions
The passengerFree of charge and on top of their baggage allowance, whether the device travels in the cabin or in the hold. It must meet the applicable weight and size limits.
Someone elseIf the machine is carried for someone else to use, it counts against the passenger's baggage allowance. That allowance can be covered by the pieces included with the ticket, or the extra carriage has to be paid for.

Swipe the table sideways to see all the information.

General notes

  • The machine can't be used on board.
  • The machine and its supplies must meet the standards for carrying dangerous goods.
  • The machine can travel on itineraries with connections, but the passenger should confirm the acceptance conditions directly with each airline involved.
  • Pack the device properly and protect its components to avoid damage. Any damage caused by inadequate packing is the passenger's responsibility.
  • The passenger can be seated anywhere.

When a passenger says the machine is for their own use, it's understood that they have renal insufficiency. Because of this, they must always arrange medical clearance through MEDIF when booking, or at the latest 48 hours before departure.

Orthopedic positioning device (OPD)

Orthopedic positioning devices give passengers with impaired mobility or postural difficulties more comfort, better posture and greater safety during the flight.

Things to keep in mind

  • It's allowed on all LATAM routes.
  • A MEDIF is only needed when the passenger declares a medical condition on the list that requires medical clearance.
  • LATAM doesn't provide this type of device; the passenger brings their own.
  • On itineraries with connections operated by other airlines, contact the other operator directly to find out their requirements.
  • Passengers who aren't self-sufficient must travel with a companion, one companion per passenger.
  • Passengers using an OPD can't sit in emergency exit rows.
  • The seat belt must be able to secure the passenger properly in the seat.

Charges

  • Personal use: free of charge for the passenger and on top of their baggage allowance.
  • Carried for someone else: the device is treated as baggage and the corresponding charges apply.

Brazil exception: passengers whose trip starts in Brazil and who need to travel with a companion must always arrange medical clearance to get the discount set by the applicable law.
