Where the service is available, how to request it, what documents are required and the conditions for the dog or cat in the cabin.

The ESAN service is for passengers who, because of their emotional condition, need to travel with an animal that gives them support. There is no charge.

LATAM accepts emotional support animals only on routes where local regulations recognise this service. Outside those routes, the animal travels under another arrangement.

The service must be requested, reviewed and confirmed in the booking before travel. Requests without prior confirmation are not accepted at the airport.

Where it is available

The animal allowed and the cabin depend on the route:

The service is available only on flights operated entirely by LATAM. The one exception is codeshare flights with Aeroméxico: the service is requested from LATAM for the leg it operates, and the Aeroméxico leg is confirmed directly with that airline before travel. Aeroméxico accepts dogs only and applies its own conditions.

On trips to, from or via the United States, the Department of Transportation does not recognise emotional support animals. In those cases, check whether the dog meets the requirements to travel as a service animal (SVAN).

Routes where the service is not allowed

Even when the itinerary connects through Mexico, Colombia or Argentina:
Galápagos Islands (Ecuador) · Australia · New Zealand · South Africa · England · Aruba · Mount Pleasant (MPN) · Fernando de Noronha · Curaçao

For Galápagos the restriction also applies when the flight carries the same flight number to or from the islands, even if Galápagos does not appear on the itinerary.

Rapa Nui (IPC) exception: the service is allowed only for island residents, and it is arranged directly at Santiago (SCL) and Rapa Nui (IPC) airports.

How to request the service

The request is made at least 48 hours before the flight departs.

  1. Check the route and the animal

Confirm the route allows the service and the dog or cat meets the requirements.

  2. Complete the ESAN form

It must be completed by the mental health professional treating the passenger and by the passenger, in the relevant sections. Also gather the animal's health documents.

  3. Send the request

At least 48 hours before the flight, through the case form or WhatsApp.

  4. Confirm the request

With LATAM or with the issuing agency, depending on the sales channel. Without prior confirmation the passenger cannot board.

  5. Arrive at the airport

One hour before the check-in time shown on the boarding pass, with the original documents.

Documents

The passenger presents LATAM's ESAN form. Exceptionally, if they do not have it, they may present a medical certificate meeting the requirements. The original documents must be available throughout the trip.

ESAN form
  • It is arranged when requesting the service and at least 48 hours before departure.
  • It is completed by the mental health professional treating the passenger, and by the passenger in their sections.
  • Once completed, it is sent through the contact form on latam.com.
  • It is valid for one year from the date the treating professional signs it.
  • While valid, it covers the different flights the passenger takes.
Medical certificate, as an alternative

It must be issued by a mental health professional — a psychiatrist or psychologist — and is presented both when requesting the service and at check-in. The document must:

  • State the passenger's emotional condition or disability.
  • Expressly state that the passenger needs to travel with an emotional support animal.
  • Include the date of issue.
  • State the full name and ID number of the passenger and of the treating professional.
  • Include contact phone numbers or the clinic's details.
  • Carry the professional's signature.
  • Be legible and understandable.
  • Be current: issued within the last year.
  • Clearly state whether the passenger will travel with more than one dog.
The animal's health documents

The animal must meet the health and documentation requirements of the countries of origin, transit and destination. Each country sets its own restrictions.

Typically required: a health certificate for the animal — with name, age, breed, vaccinations and a statement of good health — and health documents such as rabies vaccination certificates, import permits, entry authorisations, blood tests and a microchip.

Examples by country

  • Residents of Chile travelling abroad: a SAG Export Health Certificate (CZE), which requires dogs to be listed in the National Pet Register.
  • From Brazil: a current rabies vaccination card, completed and updated by a vet.
  • Within Colombia: a vaccination card or certificate stating the vet's professional registration number.

Route information is for reference and may change without notice. Advise the passenger to contact the health authority or consulate of the destination country and check IATA.

Colombia requirements

Every time the animal travels to or from Colombia it must be registered with the Instituto Agropecuario Colombiano (ICA) to obtain the Health Inspection Certificate (CIS), required on departure and arrival.

On flights to, from or within Colombia there is a maximum of six emotional support cat kennels per flight. Confirmation depends on availability.

Travel to and from the United States

The DOT does not recognise emotional support animals, so the dog travels under another arrangement. In addition, the CDC restricts entry for dogs from high-rabies-risk countries — Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela — or that have been in them in the last 6 months.

From high-rabies-risk countries

  • Be healthy and at least 6 months old.
  • An import form issued on the CDC website.
  • A microchip, with its number on every form and document.
  • Rabies vaccination, with supporting documentation.

Vaccinated in the United States

  • A rabies vaccination form issued in the United States and an export health certificate endorsed by a USDA-accredited vet.
  • Point of entry: any airport, as long as it is the one declared on the import form.

Vaccinated outside the United States

From countries without high rabies risk

  • Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, among others: a healthy dog at least 6 months old, with a microchip and a CDC import form.

If the itinerary connects through a high-risk country — Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador or Peru — the dog must meet that country's origin requirements, even without leaving the boarding area.

These conditions are for reference and may change without notice. Always check the detail on the CDC page.

Missing the required documents can prevent boarding for the passenger and their emotional support animal.

Conditions for the animal

These conditions apply to dogs and cats alike:

Dogs
  • Maximum weight 12 kilos. Above that, it can travel in the hold as AVIH, under the current procedure and at no extra cost.
  • Muzzle required from the boarding queue until disembarkation, whatever the dog's size. Small breeds meeting the pet-in-cabin conditions may travel without a muzzle inside a suitable carrier under the seat in front.
  • Lead or harness throughout the trip.
  • Breeds not allowed. Potentially dangerous dogs are not accepted: Akita Americano, Akita Inu (japonés), Bóxer, Bulldog Americano, Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Bully Americano, Doberman, Dogo Argentino, Dogo de Burdeos, Fila Brasilero, Mastín Italiano (Cane Corso), Mastín Napolitano, Pastor de Anatolia (Karabash), Pitbull (todas las razas), Presa Canario (Dogo Canario), Rottweiler, Staffordshire Bull Terrier/Staffy, Staffordshire Terrier Americano/Amstaff, Tosa Inu (japonés).
  • Eligible routes. To and from Argentina; to, from and within Colombia; and to, from and within Mexico. Flights within Mexico sold by LATAM are operated by Aeroméxico: both airlines must be contacted.

If the dog behaves inappropriately without provocation — barking, growling, jumping on other passengers or relieving itself in the wrong places — the passenger will be asked to control it and take the necessary hygiene measures. If the dog cannot travel in the cabin, it is the passenger's responsibility to have a suitable carrier to transport it in the hold as AVIH.

Cats
  • Always inside the kennel or carrier, under the seat in front, for the whole flight.
  • No specific weight limit, but it must fit inside the kennel, which must meet the pet-in-cabin (PETC) measurements.
  • The carrier must give it room to stand and move without touching the sides.
  • All breeds are allowed.
  • Eligible routes. To, from and within Colombia; and to and from Argentina. In Colombia, a maximum of six kennels per flight.
  • If the cat does not meet the size or cabin transport conditions, it travels in the hold and is exempt from the corresponding charge.
